Remembrance Day ceremonies
The following is a list of the 22 Remembrance Day ceremonies Cape Breton’s Royal Canadian Legion branches are hosting across the island on Sunday:
Cape Breton Regional
Municipality
• Sydney: Royal Canadian Legion branches 12 (Sydney), 128 (Whitney Pier) and 138 (Ashby) will host Remembrance Day ceremonies at Centre 200. Members will form up at the Sydney Shopping Centre parking lot at 9:20 a.m., then march to Centre 200 where there will be various musical and dance performances before the official ceremonies begin at 10:30 a.m.
• Glace Bay: John Bernard Croak VC Royal Canadian Legion branch 3 parade will form up at the Convergys parking lot at 10 a.m., then march to the Savoy Theatre for a 10:30 a.m. service followed by a wreathlaying ceremony at the legion.
• Dominion: Royal Canadian Legion branch 78 will hold a service at the legion at 2 p.m.
• Donkin: Royal Canadian Legion branch 5 will hold a service at 10 a.m. at St. Luke’s Church. The wreath-laying ceremony will begin at the legion at 10:50 a.m.
• East Bay: Royal Canadian Legion branch 151 in Howie Centre will hold a ceremony at 11 a.m. at the cenotaph at St. Mary’s Parish in East Bay.
• Florence: Royal Canadian Legion branch 83 will march from the former St. Stephen church at 10:30 a.m. to a service at the former elementary school.
• Louisbourg: Royal Canadian Legion branch 62 will hold a service at 9 a.m. at First United Church.
• New Waterford: Allan MacDonald Memorial Royal Canadian Legion branch 15 will hold a service at Breton Education Centre at 10 a.m., followed by a wreath-laying ceremony at the legion at 12 p.m.
• North Sydney: Royal Canadian Legion Armstrong Memorial branch 19 will hold a service at 11 a.m. at St. Matthew’s United Church then march to the cenotaph at the legion to lay wreaths.
• Port Morien: Royal Canadian Legion branch 55 will host a service at 2 p.m. at the legion.
• Sydney Mines: Royal Canadian Legion branch 8 will lineup for a parade at 10:30 a.m., followed by an 11 a.m. service at the cenotaph on Main Street.
• Westmount: Westside Royal Canadian Legion branch 126 will hold a service at 11 a.m. at the legion.
Inverness County
• Cheticamp: Royal Canadian Legion branch 32 will hold a mass at 10 a.m. at St. Peter’s Church, followed by a Remembrance Day ceremony at 11 a.m.
• Whycocomagh: Royal Canadian Legion branch 123 will hold a service at 10:30 a.m. at the Whycocomagh Education Centre auditorium.
• Inverness: Royal Canadian Legion branch 132 will hold a service at the cenotaph at 10:45 a.m., followed by a wreath-laying ceremony in the Inverness High School gymnasium.
Town of Port Hawkesbury
• Royal Canadian Legion branch 43 will host a ceremony at 11 a.m. at the cenotaph on Reeves Street. A reception with entertainment will follow at the legion from 2-7 p.m.
Richmond County
• Arichat: Royal Canadian Legion branch 150 will hold a service at 9:30 a.m. at Our Lady of Assumption Church, followed by a wreath-laying ceremony at 11 a.m. at the legion and a reception at 12:30 p.m.
• St. Peter’s: Royal Canadian Legion branch 47 will hold a service at the Lions Community Hall at 10 a.m.
• L’Ardoise: Royal Canadian Legion branch 110 will hold its ceremony at 10:30 a.m. at the L’Ardoise Community Centre.
Victoria County
• Baddeck: Royal Canadian Legion branch 53 will hold a service at 9:30 a.m. at Knox Presbyterian Church, then parade to the legion for an 11 a.m. wreathlaying ceremony. A reception with food and entertainment will follow from 12-3 p.m. At 5:07 p.m., all of the area churches will ring their bells 100 times to mark the 100th anniversary of the First World War armistice.
• Ingonish: Royal Canadian Legion branch 105 will have a parade from the legion at 9:40 a.m. to St. John’s Anglican Church for a 10 a.m. service. At 10:40 a.m., there will be a wreath-laying ceremony at the legion, followed by a dinner at 1 p.m. at the church hall. The legion will then host a Remembrance Day pub from 2-9 p.m.
• Iona: Grandona Royal Canadian Legion branch 124 will hold a service at 10:45 a.m. at the cenotaph in Iona.
