Plea date set on sex offences

SYDNEY — A 41-year-old Sydney man charged with a host of sex offences has been released on conditions.

The man, whose name is banned from publicatio­n, is charged with four counts of assault, three counts of sexual assault, three counts of sexual interferen­ce and single counts of assault with a weapon (a belt buckle) and invitation to sexual touching.

The offences are alleged to have occurred in Sydney between October and November.

The accused was released after posting $10,000 in bail (property) and agreeing to abide by a host of conditions that include having no contact with the complainan­ts in the case and he is not to associate or be in the company of anyone under the age of 18. He is also to stay away from places where individual­s under 18 are likely to gather and is to report to Cape Breton Regional Police, in person, once a week. The accused is now expected to enter pleas to the charges Dec. 10.

Bail hearing reschedule­d

SYDNEY — A scheduled bail hearing for a Sydney man facing sex offences has been reassigned to Nov. 19.

Devon Joseph Edwards (Williams), 19, of George Street is charged with sexual assault, sexual interferen­ce and two counts of breaching court orders by failing to keep the peace and be of good behaviour and failing to refrain from intoxicati­ng substances. The offences are alleged to have occurred in Sydney Mines in July.

The accused was to have a bail hearing Thursday but the case was adjourned until Nov. 19.

Accused gets probation for assault

SYDNEY — A Glace Bay man has been sentenced to complete a probation term of 18 months after pleading guilty to an assault.

Jansen Alexander Ward, 30, of Hillside Avenue, was facing multiple offences but after entering a guilty plea on the assault, the remaining seven counts were dismissed.

Among the conditions of his probation, Ward is to refrain from alcohol and drugs not prescribed to him and have no contact with the complainan­t in the case. The offence occurred last November in Glace Bay. Ward has spent 72 days on remand and was released in August on a host of conditions including a 24/7 curfew. He recorded no breaches during his release.

Accused to have psychiatri­c assessment

SYDNEY — A Membertou man is to undergo a psychiatri­c assessment to determine his fitness to stand trial and whether he is criminally responsibl­e for his actions. Tyrone Paul Munian, 19, is charged with two counts of unlawfully being in a dwelling and a single count of assault. The offences are alleged to have occurred Nov. 7 in Membertou.

Munian is to complete the assessment at the East Coast Forensic Hospital in Dartmouth.

He is now scheduled to return to provincial court Dec. 13.
