High school soccer hands out hardware

Riverview’s Patterson, Coleman and Pelly named high school soccer most valuable players

The Cape Breton High School Soccer League recently announced its award-winners and all-star team selections for the 2018 season.

In the boys’ division, John Patterson of the Riverview Reds took home the most valuable player award. Patterson finished second in the league in goals (16), behind only Daniel Nemis of Breton Education Centre, who fired home 24 goals. Patterson was also named to the all-star team.

Breton Education Centre Bears head coach Wil vanHall was named the league’s coach of the year. He guided the New Waterford squad to a 9-3-0 record and a second-place finish in the regular season. The team also placed second in the Nova Scotia School Athletic Federation Division 2 provincial­s earlier this month.

In the girls’ division, Maddie Coleman of the Riverview Reds was named the MVP for her league. She finished third in the league in goals (16), behind Caleigh MacPherson (24) and Abby MacNeil (20), both of BEC. Coleman was also named to the all-star team.

Breton Education Centre head coach Karl MacNeil took home the league’s coach of the year, leading the Bears to a 7-1-0 record and tied for first place with Riverview. MacNeil guided BEC to its secondstra­ight NSSAF Division 2 provincial title earlier this month.

In the junior varsity girls’ division, Faith Pelly of the Riverview Reds captured the league’s most valuable player award. Pelly finished first in league goal-scoring with 20 markers. She was also named to the league’s all-star team.

Riverview Reds head coach Peter Trask was given the league’s coach of the year honours. Riverview finished first in the league with a 7-1-0 record. Trask led the team to a silver medal at the NSSAF provincial­s last month.

The league also announced its all-star teams.

In the boys’ division, Nemis (BEC), Jacob Johnson (MHS), Michael Grechuk (BEC), Tyler Simpson (RHS), Braedon Hiscock (GBHS), Issac Rhynold (SA), Aaron MacLean (BEC), Justin Ferguson (SA), Mike Dermody (RHS) and Nathan MacLeod (RHS) were given honours.

In the girls’ division, MacPherson (BEC), MacNeil (BEC), Alesha Hoban (SA), Tessa Dowie (BEC), Janelle Tierney (RHS), Becca LeBlanc (RHS), Alice Reynolds-White (RHS), Kate MacNeil (GBHS), Holly Vickers (MHS), and Chloe Parsons (RHS) were all-star selections.

In the junior varsity girls’ division, Eve Sommers (RHS), Emma Noseworthy (BEC), Mea Tonet (RHS), Meghan MacKinnon (BEC), Kayla Osmond (MSH), Alyssa Buchanan (MHS), Joelyn Poulette (ABMHS), Lauren Farrell (RHS), Maria Morrison (BEC), and Anne Sampson (RHS) were named all-stars.

The Cape Breton High School Soccer League will resume play for the 2019 season in September.
