Funding announcement for Atlantic Memorial Park scheduled for Friday

-

The Atlantic Memorial Park Society and the Cape Breton Regional Municipality are inviting guests to the unveiling of a new project.

There will be a presentation taking place at 11 a.m., Friday, at the Joan Harriss Cruise Pavilion in Sydney.

Mark Eyking, MP for Sydney– Victoria, will be onsite to make an important funding announcement on behalf of the federal government and other funding partners.

The society has been working to secure funding to move forward with Phase 1 of its development project with the restoration of the command post at Chapel Point Battery.

The location of this purposed park is at the entrance to Sydney harbour, an area which is steeped in military history dating back to the late 1800s.

The project area is intended to span over a 120-acre area with multiple projects constructed in phases over a five-year period.

Projects components will include a restored Chapel Point Battery, a family park, a First Nations encampment, walking trails in a large woodland area, nearby beach access and a cliffside monument.

Proponents say the project costs will be made possible through government funding, private donations, community contributions, crowdfunding and other special fundraisers.

Cost of the project is estimated to be between $15 million to $25 million.
