ENCOURAGING CREATIVITY
Marconi hosts Artists in Motion Sweet Hearts art sale
Marconi students display their creative skills for classmates.
SYDNEY — The varied skills of some Nova Scotia Community College Marconi Campus students were on full display this week.
The applied media and communication arts class hosted its Artists in Motion Sweet Hearts art sale.
The setup allowed aspiring photographers to practise their craft through a Valentine photo booth, while other students sold Valentine’s Day cards they created along with photographs and other works of art.
The featured aspect of the gathering was a silent auction that displayed examples of different media and creative skills the students have learned and developed.
“The students came up with the initiative to really practise their skills and we are all about encouraging the creative economy, entrepreneurship and that spirit of working with the strengths and skills people have,” said Heather MacIsaac, lead faculty for the program.
“Not everybody is an artist, so we have other people working kind of on the back end … on finances and the whole thing. It’s been great. It has made learning fun.”
The one-year program has been popular with aspiring photographers, graphic designers and even an interior designer this year.
“Some people come to this program to work on a portfolio, figure out the skills they have, get a little more tech savvy and meet other creative people, which is the best part.”
An estimated 15-20 different mediums were on display Wednesday during the class art show, including inks, paints, photography and logo design.
Profits go to a class fund the students use for things like gas money when they go on photo shoots and an end of year party.
A portion of the money will go to the students to spark the entrepreneurial spirit, said MacIsaac.
