MABOU — Glenora Distillery’s Gleann Dubh 13-year-old peated single malt whisky will be featured at this year’s NSLC Festival of Whisky.

Gleann Dubh received the silver outstanding medal at the 2017 Whiskies of the World. The festival, which runs Feb. 28 to March 2 in Halifax, will give Nova Scotians the opportunity to taste some of the finest whiskies in the world and learn about what goes into the craft.

Glenora is North America’s first single malt whisky distillery. The distillery’s president Lauchie MacLean said Nova Scotia’s whisky industry shows tremendous promise with several distilleries now aging product.

“With the great quality of some of the other whisky I have tasted here in Nova Scotia, I believe that our producers have a great future ahead of us,” he said in a release.

Glenora Distillery is in a “very Scottish part of Cape Breton Island,” where the key ingredient of water flows from the Mabou highlands.

Events like the NSLC’s Festival of Whisky provides opportunities to educate curious newcomers and whisky connoisseurs alike on the quality of Canadian whisky and receive valuable feedback, MacLean said.

“We have been distilling and bottling our product here for 29 years now. We believe we have some incredible single malt whisky; some for every type of whisky lover,” he said. “Quality whisky will always have a market on the international stage. Whisky lovers truly appreciate unique and great tasting products and that’s what we make here in Nova Scotia.”

Attendees will be able to meet three of Nova Scotia’s local whisky producers and learn about their products at the festival’s grand tastings on March 2.

For the first time, the NSLC Festival of Whisky will offer an on-site whisky store at its new venue, the Halifax Marriott Harbourfront Hotel.

The festival will feature more than 180 whisky selections from eight countries. It’s a three-day festival that includes two grand tastings, two whisky dinners dedicated to single malt Scotch and Irish whiskey, an evening to experience the distilleries of Scotland and four educational seminars.
