When did you start running? For years, I did a couple of jogs a week just to stay in shape. But as for really running with purpose and passion — that started in 2010.

Why did you start to run? My friend Allan MacKenzie, who had just won the Cape Breton Fiddlers full marathon in 2009, helped me realize that entering major local races was within my grasp. A year later, I finished my first marathon at the 2010 Fiddlers Run.

What race are you doing in the Cape Breton Fiddlers Run in September? The half marathon.

What is the longest run (by distance or time) that you’ve ever done? I’ve run four marathons in total.

What do you eat before a race? Toast or bagel, with peanut butter or jam. What is your favourite place to run? The Cabot Trail during the annual Cabot Trail Relay Race. What is your favourite running shoe? The Saucony Kinvara.

Do you run solo or in a group? 95 per cent of the time, I’m a lone wolf — but when I do run with a group, I love it.

What is your favourite workout? Long, slow distance run of 16 km or more.

What is your favourite running book? Born to Run by Chris McDougall.

How has running changed you? It’s added motivation and meaning to each day. Makes me feel fit and capable of nearly anything. Improves mood. Helps me better realize my place in life. I could go on and on.

What is your funniest/most embarrassing running story? That would have to be the time I crossed the finish line of the 2010 Fiddlers Fun Run 10 km with one shoe and one sock foot.

What are three words to describe how you feel after a run? I feel complete.

Finish this sentence: I run, because ... it’s my favourite thing in the world to do. Plain and simple.
