AFTERNOON IN MAIN-A-DIEU A WARM DELIGHT

-

Reading an article in a recent edition of the Cape Breton Post, I discovered that “Tea by the Sea” is served at Main-a-Dieu’s Coastal Discovery Centre (CDC) on Wednesdays from 2 to 3:30 p.m. Afternoon tea includes fancy sandwiches, tea biscuits with jam and a variety of homemade sweets — all for $5 per person.

My sister, husband and I ventured over to Main-a-Dieu from the Northside and we were very happy we did.

A lovely lady welcomed us and she chatted with nearly everyone in the room, about 44 by my count. Young adult servers provided coffee and tea service promptly and efficiently.

My advice, if you plan to attend, is to arrive early as the room fills up quickly. Those who are not fortunate enough to get inside for the first sitting will need to wait a bit for their chance to enjoy the delectable delights.

While you wait, or after you have enjoyed your refreshments, the Fishermen’s Museum is just down the hall, across from the local library. The museum is small, but very informative with displays of items related to the fishing industry, historical photographs and newspaper clippings. The hallway walls are filled with photos of students and staff as well as a few other mementos. The CDC was the local school until 2000.

Hats off to the volunteers of this community of 240 people. You are setting a fine example for your community, raising funds to support local programs.

We highly recommend this afternoon outing, especially on a warm, sunny Wednesday in Cape Breton. The last “Tea by the Sea” for the season will be on Aug. 28.
