Cape Breton hockey teams to play in East Hants Invitation­al tournament

SYDNEY — Four Cape Breton minor hockey teams will take part in the East Hants Invitation­al bantam hockey tournament at the East Hants Sportsplex this weekend.

The Sydney Steelers, Northside Vikings and Strait Richmond Pirates will play in the ‘A’ division, while the Glace Bay Miners are the lone island representa­tive in the ‘AA’ category.

Sydney opens the tournament at 1:25 p.m. today against the Cole Harbour Wings. The team will also play Saturday at 10:30 a.m. against Northside and 3:10 p.m. versus the Halifax

Hawks. As for Northside, they begin the event 1:40 p.m. today against Halifax, before facing Sydney Saturday morning and Cole Harbour at 4:20 p.m.

Meanwhile, Strait Richmond will kick things off today at 12:15 p.m. against Clare-Digby. The team will also play later in the day at 4 p.m. against the Eastern Shore Mariners. The Pirates play one game on Saturday at 11:40 a.m. against the host East Hants Penguins. Glace Bay will open the ‘AA’ tournament today at 12:30 p.m. against the Moncton Hawks. The club will also play later in the day at 5:10 p.m. against the Cumberland County Ramblers. The Miners end the round robin against East Hants Saturday at 2 p.m.

The ‘A’ division semifinals will be played Saturday evening, while the ‘AA’ semifinals are set for Sunday morning.

Championsh­ip games will be held Sunday afternoon with the ‘A’ division scheduled for 1:30 p.m. and the ‘AA’ final set for 3 p.m.
