ONGO, Francis J. “Frank” North Sydney

It is with heavy hearts that we announce the peaceful passing of Frank Ongo, age 85, loving father, grandfathe­r, great-grandfathe­r, brother and friend, on Saturday, April 25, 2020, at the Northside General Hospital. Born in North Sydney on May 29, 1934, he was the son of the late Bernard and Eva (Strickland) Ongo. Frank was employed with Marine Atlantic in North Sydney, sailing aboard several vessels, retiring as Chief Cook after 33 years of service. He was a faithful member of St. Joseph Church in North Sydney and a 4th degree member of the William B. Macleod Assembly of the Knights of Columbus. Frank was an active volunteer within his community devoting much of his time between Kiwanis Golden K, the Meals on Wheels program and Palliative Care. He is survived by his two children, Frank Jr. (Shannon), Sydney Mines and Tevis Ongo (Joseph), Sydney; by his grandchild­ren, Chris, Tyler, Justin, Andrew, Michelle, Devin; great grandchild­ren, Hylie, Mya, Emmett, Brianna, Chloe, Hunter; also surviving his companion, Shirley Robinson; his four brothers, John, North Sydney, Leo, Sydney, Lloyd (Audrey Ann), Montreal, David (Lillian), Vancouver; by his four sisters, Louise Ongo, Moncton, Yvonne Moffatt, Dartmouth, Carole Russo, Toronto, Marlene Salt-marsh, Boston, Mass; special sister, Sylvia Ferguson and several nieces and nephews. Frank was predecease­d by his wife, the former, Mary Catherine (Poirier) Ongo; brothers, Donald and Fred; a sister, Eleanor Chamberlai­n and his infant sister, Louise. Thank you to staff of 3B at the Cape Breton Regional Hospital, 4E at the Northside General Hospital and Dr. Patrick O’grady for the care and compassion shown to Frank and his family during his illness. Due to restrictio­ns surroundin­g Covid-19, a family visitation was held with prayers, officiated by Rev. Doug Macdonald in the W.J. Dooley Funeral Home, 107 Pleasant Street, North Sydney. A public visitation and Funeral Mass for Frank will be celebrated at a later date. In lieu of flowers memorial donations may be made to Kiwanis Golden K or Hospice/palliative Care Society of Cape Breton County. Online condolence­s may be sent to the family at www.wjdooley.com.
