Thomas James Fennell, 78, of Halifax, Nova Scotia passed away peacefully at St. Vincents Guest House after a lengthy illness. Born in Sydney, Nova Scotia. He was the son of the late Richard and Eileen (O’callagan) Fennell. Butchie moved to Halifax to attend NSCAD and Dalhousie University after winning multiple scholarships to continue his studies. He was honoured throughout his career in graphic design, painting, animation, sculpture, and photography. He served as Art Director for several magazines while working for Nova Scotia Communications and Information Center and CBC. He received several awards in NYC for painting and photography and was the recipient of The Coutts Hallmark Art Scholarship, Cape Breton County Scholarship and Bursary, Chateaugai Scholarship and Bursary, Elizabeth Styrling Nut Memorial Scholarship and Bursary, and The Lieutenant Governor’s Award in Nova Scotia. He ended his career opening his own shop, Antique Advantage which specialized in repairing and restoration of antiques. He is survived by his wife, Joy; daughter, Ashley Pilkey (Christopher), Dartmouth; sister, Frances Maclean (Joseph), Sydney; brother, Art Fennell (Margaret), Sydney; sister, Judith Fennell, Calgary; and many nieces and nephews.
