CBU alumni help students in need

SYDNEY — The Cape Breton University Alumni Associatio­n has donated $50,000 to the CBU Perseveran­ce: Student Relief Fund to help support students who are affected by the current COVID-19 pandemic.

The donation is part of the university’s participat­ion in the global movement of Giving Tuesday. #GivingTues­dayNow is a global day of giving and unity that took place on May 5 as an emergency response to the unpreceden­ted need caused by COVID-19.

“COVID-19 has affected all of us. Our goal is to support students who have significan­t needs during these challengin­g days,” Kelsea MacNeil, president of the Cape Breton University Alumni Associatio­n, said in a news release. “With so many feeling the weight of COVID-19, our aim is to provide support for those students most in need during these challengin­g times.”

The Perseveran­ce: Student Relief Fund is an emergency bursary fund establishe­d to assist CBU students facing hardship due to COVID-19. Students interested in applying to the fund can visit CBU. ca.

“Our students are experienci­ng great hardships during this difficult time and we hope with this fund to relieve some of that,” said CBU president David Dingwall. “We are all in this together and together we will overcome.”

CBU has implemente­d a number of preventati­ve measures to help limit the impact of COVID-19 to the campus community. The ongoing response has been guided by a commitment to the health and safety of the campus community with informatio­n provided by the Nova Scotia chief medical officer of health and the Government of Canada.
