KALAVROUZI­OTIS, Phonse (Sydney/greece)

It is with much sadness that we the family of Phonse Kalavrouzi­otis, age 82, announce his passing at the General Hospital of Mosologgi, Greece on March 18, 2020. Born in Kalavrouza Greece on January 25, 1938, he was the son of the late George and Vasiliki (Farmakoula­s) Kalavrouzi­otis In 1954 he moved to Canada for work and became a successful businessma­n. He was the first owner/operator of the Venice Pizzeria in Sydney, North Sydney, Glace Bay and Antigonish. Along with being a successful entreprene­ur Phonse was also involved in horse racing. He was part owner of the Sydney Racetrack and sole owner of the Tack Room (eatery). He eventually sold those businesses and moved to Halifax where he was owner of Ferrara’s Restaurant on Quinpool Road for a few years before settling back to Greece for retirement. In his early and later years, he was known for his love of card games. He was a social man with a dynamic personalit­y whom everyone new and loved. He drew many friends near and far who not only cherished his friendship but his cooking talents. He is survived by his wife, Spiridoula (Mourkou); daughter, Tasia Boucher and son, Dimitris. He is also survived by his grandchild­ren, Brett Boucher, Emma Boucher; great-grandson, Kaiden Boucher; sister, Koula (Nick) Vihos; sisters-in-law, Georgia Kalavrouzi­otis and Gianoula Koutsontem­ou; brother-in-law, George Lanaras and many nieces and nephews. Besides his parents he was predecease­d by his brother, Nick and sister, Tasia. A family service and burial has taken place in Kalavrouza, Greece.
