HURD, John ‘Jack’ Robert Bras d’Or/North Sydney

It is with great sadness we announce the sudden passing of Jack Hurd, on May 17, 2020 at age 69. Born in North Sydney on May 21, 1950, he was the son of the late Albert Hurd and Gertrude (Burchell) Hurd. He worked in maintenanc­e and retired from Marine Atlantic after 33 years of service. Jack was a fierce lover of music and could often be heard carrying on a Johnny Cash tune. In his early years, he was known as an excellent pool player. Although he moved away from Ward 4 in 2002, Jack could still be found visiting Indian Beach daily. He was a great story teller who always generated a good laugh, leaving his family and friends with some fond memories. He is survived by his wife of 42 years, Linda (Cook) Hurd; daughter, Alison Hurd (Dave), and son, Robert Hurd; brothers, Martin (Winnie) Hurd, Halifax, Gerard (Rhoda) Hurd, North Sydney; brother-inlaw, Brian Douglas, North Sydney; sisters, Mary Jo Keeping, Sydney Mines, Thérèse (Jim) MacLeod, Eastern Passage, Pauline (Brian) White, Millville; sister-in-law, Thelma Cook; his mother’s second husband, Oscar Cordero, and numerous nieces and nephews. He is predecease­d by sister, Anne Douglas; brothers-in-law, Terry Keeping, Leo Cooke, Jack Cook; father and mother-in-law, Thomas and Lillian Cook, and many good friends including his special golf buddy Joe Dowling. Cremation has taken place. There will be no visitation. A private family service will be held at a later date. In lieu of flowers memorial donations may be made to the Indian Beach Society c/o Serella Bagnell, 55 Amelia St., Sydney, NS B1P 6C4, or a charity of choice.
