NEW LIBRARY NEEDS LOUDER SUPPORT
Is it my imagination or has the conversation around a new library for the Cape Breton Regional Municipality (CBRM) screeched to a halt?
While Halifax, Truro and Antigonish (check their ‘new library’ websites) enjoy the well-documented economic, cultural and esthetic benefits that state-of-the art libraries bestow on communities, are we in CBRM content to remain in the 20th century with an out-of-date edifice on Falmouth Street? One that is too small, only partially accessible, non-air conditioned and desperately in need of safe winter parking, in particular for seniors and members with mobility issues?
The Sydney-based Mcconnell Library’s one redeeming feature is its supremely competent, professional and friendly staff. Despite the restrictions of their work environment, they manage the daily demands of checking out books (print and audio), CDS, movies, magazines and sports equipment. They schedule time for computer users; create programs for babies, teens and seniors; provide space for meetings, book clubs and game nights; and welcome story tellers, book launches and author readings.
They also store and protect documents and artifacts such as the Gaelic Collection and the Music Collection. And they raise funds several times yearly to help support the place and the work they obviously love.
As a community, we need to speak loudly for a new library that will encompass the features and amenities other communities enjoy. Silence isn’t working.
