GLACE BAY — Stan Peach says it will be sometime before his family finds out the type of pills they found in a bag of Planters Craft Bar Mix.

Peach of Glace Bay said he received a call from the Canadian Food Inspection Agency Friday morning and was told the pills are currently with Health Canada and it will take 30 to 60 days before they are identified.

“I can’t imagine how busy the laboratories are with COVID-19 right now, so I realize it could be a lot longer before these are tested,” said Peach, adding he understands the timeline.

“I would like to have an answer to this and I am sure the company would like to have an answer to this, but I realize a current crisis is going on in Canada and the world,” he said.

Peach said he was told the investigation is continuing.

“(The food agency) said they were in the plant for an inspection but never turned up anything,” he said.

“They can’t find a source for these pills yet, but I believe they are going to do their due diligence.”

Peach was in his backyard in late May with his wife Karen Peach, who was eating the bar mix from a bowl. She was looking for a pretzel for their four-year-old great-granddaughter Summer, when she discovered the pills.

Tom Campbell, supervisor at the Canadian Food Inspection Agency office in Sydney, said he can’t comment on the investigation but confirmed he provided Peach with an update on the case.

“For the protection of everyone, I am not allowed to share specific information.”

Campbell added they are continuing the investigation which involves the manufacture.

In an earlier story, officials with Johnvince Foods, the manufacture of the bar mix, said they take these matters seriously and are investigating.

A company official said they have not had a similar incident in their 45 years in business.
