Haircuts by the light of the moon

These are challenging times. COVID 19 has kept loved ones apart, kept many from earning a living and elevated levels of stress and anxiety.

In no way do I want to make light of any of this, but I do want to point out an unintended consequence of these COVID days and that’s an increasingly hairy world!

During the past few months, I’ve seen many photos and videos of home haircuts – some better than others. I even tried my hand at cutting my boyfriend’s hair. Luckily, Allie’s hair has some curl and is quite forgiving.

Mom has always cut dad’s hair; he claims he’s too busy to go into town every few weeks. I don’t know what the cuts looked like when they were first married more than 60 years ago, but dad has good looking hair!

I remember Grandma saying that we should check the phase of the moon when booking a hair appointment. She believed the moon phases influenced future hair growth and appearance, so depending on your needs you should get your hair cut during a specific moon phase. There is no scientific proof that this works, but there’s nothing to lose by following these guidelines:

NEW MOON:

The new moon is considered to be a moon phase which is damaging to the hair and where a weakening of the hair fibres and greater hair loss can occur. It’s not advisable to get a haircut during this phase.

FIRST QUARTER:

If you want your hair to grow much faster and get stronger you should get it cut during this waxing moon phase. It’s an ideal period for getting rid of split ends.

FULL MOON:

The full moon is the perfect phase to undergo a considerable haircut. Grandma believed to have a haircut during full moon encourages it to grow back healthier, stronger and with shinier.

LAST QUARTER:

Getting a haircut on a waning crescent lunar phase is the best choice if you have thick, unruly hair. Hair that’s been cut on a crescent moon will grow slower and will maintain the shape of your hairstyle longer.

After 16 long weeks, I got a haircut after work on Monday. It was like winning the lottery. I didn’t care what phase the moon was in.
