NEW VICTORIA – A stop work order has been lifted at the site where a man was buried under debris in the back of a semi-truck trailer in New Victoria last week.

The Nova Scotia Department of Labour and Advanced Education told the Cape Breton Post on Monday work has resumed at 3975 New Waterford Highway, a 13,500-square-foot lot at the corner of Browns Road.

The stop work order was issued by the Department of Labour on June 16 after an incident at the location on June 15.

In an email to the Post, the department wouldn't share much detail about the incident other than saying the stop work order was lifted on June 17.

“We have no further information to share at this time,” said department spokesperson Shannon Kerr. “Our inspection is ongoing.”

Although not confirmed by the Department of Labour, the Post has learned work resumed at the location last Friday. The property has since been cleared.

New Victoria Volunteer Fire Department responded to a call to the site at 4:52 p.m. on June 15.

Workers were on-site demolishing a structure, which had burned in recent months, and were loading the debris in the back of a truck owned by McDonald Trucking Ltd.

The operator of the excavator wasn't aware somebody was in the back of the trailer and started filling it with pieces of the structure including wood and concrete, trapping the man underneath.

Close to 12 firefighters responded to the scene, along with Cape Breton Regional Police and Emergency Health Services.

The man was removed from the trailer at 5:25 p.m. He was alert and talking as he was placed inside the ambulance. He was transported to the Cape Breton Regional Hospital for treatment of his injuries at 5:45 p.m.

The name or age of the man has not been released and a status update was never provided. However, the Post has learned the individual was an older man and reportedly had surgery on June 16 for possible lowerbody injuries.
