Glace Bay, New Waterford schools honour athletes
GLACE BAY — Studentathletes from Glace Bay High and New Waterford’s Breton Education Centre have been recognized by their schools for their contributions and achievements over the past year.
In Glace Bay, Alec Campbell and Katie MacNeil are respectively the 2019-20 male and female athletes of the year. Campbell was also named the school’s most valuable player in both hockey and baseball, while MacNeil copped similar honours in soccer and basketball, the latter she shared with co-MVP Emily MacLeod.
The other major honour, the Derrick Thomas Sportsmanship Award, was presented to David Beaton.
Other Panthers’ team MVP award winners included Olivia McDonald (junior varsity volleyball), Maria McPhee (varsity volleyball), Samantha Fernandez (junior varsity basketball), Josh Boutilier (junior varsity basketball), Andrew Boutilier (varsity basketball) and Matthew MacIntosh (varsity soccer).
More than 20 other Glace Bay High student-athletes were recognized with coaches awards, leadership awards, most improved awards and rookie-of-the-year honours.
In New Waterford, the BEC awards were presented to both high school and middle school student-athletes. Luke MacKinnon and Ava MacKinnon were named middle school athletes of the year, while the male and female athletes of the year at the high school level were Aaron MacLean and Abby MacNeil. The middle school Good Sport Awards went to Tyson Crosby and Fiona McGillivray, while the high school recipients were Joe Oliver and Maya Sebastian.
MVPs in various middle school sports included Ainsley Bishop and Evelyn Boutilier (‘B’ soccer), Jana O’Quinn (‘A’ soccer), Alex Kennedy (soccer), Emma Gillis (‘B’ basketball), Paige Ross (‘A’ basketball), Cole Rockett (‘B’ basketball) and Luke MacKinnon (‘A’ basketball).
BEC high school MVPs included Brooklyn Antle (junior varsity soccer), Abby MacNeil (varsity soccer), Bret Hillier (varsity soccer), Conor Chiasson (golf), Kyle MacKenzie and Aaron Maclean (baseball), Natalie Barry ( junior varsity basketball), Abby MacNeil (varsity basketball), Kevin Boutilier (junior varsity basketball), Ben Kearney and Ethan MacNeil (boys basketball).
