SYDNEY — Get ready to hit the books again as all 12 Cape Breton Regional Library branches are set to reopen Tuesday.

The opening means people will be able to pick up holds, access book collections “in short visits,” return items and schedule time to use public computers. Tuesday's opening also includes the bookmobile.

Cape Breton Regional Library board chair Amanda McDougall said they support and appreciate the efforts made by staff throughout "unprecedented times.”

“Staff have worked very hard to ensure public safety is our No. 1 priority and developed a phased-in approach to reopening.”

The public library service has been closed since the province declared a state of emergency in March and implemented a host of public health measures in a bid to stem the spread of COVID-19.

Despite the closure, staff have continued to serve the public and have witnessed a marked increase in registration as well as the use of elibrary resources.

Tracy Wilson, co-ordinator of community support, said in a press release that staff have implemented online programming such as virtual story times, puppet shows and online book clubs. Children, teens and adults interested in participating in the TD Summer Reading program can register at cbrl.ca.

“We are looking forward to resuming in-person services for patrons,” said interim regional librarian Lisa Mulak.

“Those daily interactions with patrons are what sets libraries apart from other public space — all are welcome.”

During the closure, library management developed a reopening plan for all 12 locations.

The first phase of the plan was launched in June with the library take-out service.

“The public are grateful to once again borrow materials,” said Mulak.

The next phase will see a continuation of contactless service.

In consort with the province and public health officials, the reopening plan for the libraries will include COVID-19 protocols and some changes to services to better ensure safety of patrons and staff.

Among the changes visitors to the facilities will see include the installation of shields at service desks; some furniture has been removed to provide more unencumbered floor space; computer sessions will be limited to 50 minutes to allow for cleaning between uses; all returned library materials are quarantined for 72 hours; high-touch surfaces will be cleaned more frequently; there will be a limit on the number of people allowed in the library at one time; and, good news for some, there will no longer be late fines on overdue materials.

“Some of our spaces will look a little different but staff will be there to help navigate this new normal,” said Mulak.

“Thank you for your patience and understanding as libraries continue to serve communities in Cape Breton and Victoria Counties in a safe and respectful manner."
