Uber app goes live in Halifax for essential travel

-

HALIFAX — Uber Canada has made its ridesharing app available for essential travel across the Halifax Regional Municipality.

The app went live on Thursday at 1 p.m.

“We strongly encourage local residents to adhere to the measures put in place by the Medical Officer of Health to help contain the spread of COVID-19, including limiting travel for essential purposes only,” the company said Wednesday in a news release.

“Where there is an essential need, like travel for frontline workers or the need to pick up a prescription, Haligonians will be able to request a safe, affordable ride through the

Uber app.”

Among the stipulations are a “no mask, no ride” rule. Riders and drivers will have to confirm that they are wearing a mask or face cover.

Uber said public officials can request contact tracing support from the company in response to outbreaks of infectious diseases.

“Uber, a company that moves people, is asking you not to move.” said Matthew Price, general manager of Uber Canada, in the release.

“If your travel is essential, our app will be available for you to request a ride. If not, in line with public health guidance, please stay home. Once restrictions ease, we look forward to supporting Halifax's recovery and growth.”

Uber Canada announced in October its intention to seek a licence and launch its ridesharing app in the Halifax region before the end of the year. A release said qualified drivers needed to register and complete a sign-up process at drive.uber.com.
