SMITH, William Matthew

-

We, the family of Bill Smith regret to announce his passing on Sunday, December 6, 2020, at the Northside General Hospital. Born September 23, 1936, in Sydney, he was the son of the late John “Jack” and Margaret (McKenna) Smith. Dad started his career with Eastern Bakeries. He worked for many years with Ideal Ice Cream and eventually, Scotsburn Dairy until his retirement. Dad was well-liked by everyone he met with his quick wit and sense of humour. He was an “honorary member” of the Thursday ladies quilting club. Although he never sewed a stitch, he looked forward to the laughs, lunch and dessert. Dad also enjoyed playing cards and sharing stories with his many friends. Bill is survived by his sons, Bill (Jackie), Sydney and Greg (Tracy), Sydney River; daughter, Brenda (Jim Whalen), Albert Bridge; grandchildren, Jessica and Sarah Arden Smith, Bryce Whalen, Zach and Keagan McQuaid; sister, Marie (Calvin LeDrew), Bras d’Or; brother, John (Jan), Quispamsis, NB; and his many nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his wife of 53 years, Annette (Morrison) Smith, as well as his brothers and sisters-in-law, Robert (Maisie) Smith and Jim (Judy) Smith. We would like to thank City Homemakers, New Dawn and the VON for the care they gave dad. Visitation will take place at Sydney Memorial Chapel on Friday, December 11, 2020 from 2-4 p.m. A private family service and interment will take place at a later date. Memorials may be made to the Alzheimer’s Society or the Northside/Harbourview Hospital Foundation. Words of comfort can be sent to the family at www.sydneymemorialchapel.ca or e-mail sydneymemorialchapel@ns.sympatico.ca.
