HOLIDAY HILARITY
Police take to social media to help residents stay safe during the holidays
SYDNEY — Members of the Cape Breton Regional Police might have stepped on the other side of the law by stealing hearts.
The regional police service has released a hilarious video on its Facebook page using the song "The Twelve Days of Christmas" as a unique and fun way to share tips for a safe holiday season.
“We've had very positive feedback from the users on social media," said Desiree Magnus, spokeswoman for the regional police. “People have been enjoying getting to know our employees a little bit more, who they are as real people.”
The idea came while looking for a way to promote their annual holiday safety tips. After a converted song was composed, Magnus said they sought out the cast of singers from their members and staff.
“We went around and got everyone to sing for us,” she said.
The clips are taken from various locations the officers and employees work out of. Participants included from their investigative unit, jailers, front-line patrols, K-9, ident, records staff and more.
“Some were recruited and some were volunt-told,” Magnus added, laughing.
The rehearsal was on the spot and fun.
“There was no pressure — it was meant to be fun and to get the message across, which I think we did,” she added.
Magnus wasn't surprised by the love from the public on the CBRPS Facebook page, as well as the comments.
“We had hoped this was the kind of reaction we would get,” she said.
Even their own members were enjoying it, especially acting Chief Robert Walsh.
“I know he was laughing and is still laughing," Magnus said. “He really enjoyed it.”
However, Walsh, who was also part of the video, was the only non-singer. Walsh said there was a good reason.
“It was my Christmas gift to everyone not to sing,” he said.
Walsh said the video was fun to put together and to watch.
“We hope the community enjoys seeing the lighter side of the people in our police service,” he added.
One of the more obliging cast members was Sgt. Barry Gordon of the Membertou division, who started things out.
“He embraced it full on,” Magnus said. “It's perfect because he started things off, so he got to close every loop of the song.”
However, there's no question which was the most co-operative unit for her on production day.
“The dogs,” Magnus said, laughing.
Chase and Beau, service dogs with the K-9 unit, also appeared to be most in tune of all the performers, becoming the obvious stars of the production and getting plenty of praise on social media.
“Awesome job CBRP, loved the dog,” posted Janine MacKay. “Merry Christmas to all, stay safe.”
John Junior Briand also recognized the talents of the K-9 members.
“Great job but why did I like the dog the most?” he asked, adding laughing emojis.
As of late Tuesday afternoon the video had 463 likes or love icons, 93 comments and 336 shares.
“Merry Christmas to all,” posted Judy Wadden, who added some humour to the mix.
“Don't quit your day jobs. Lol Great sports. Stay safe.”
Kathleen MacCormack posted emojis of clapping hands and GIF of a Christmas tree.
“Merry Christmas to you all,” she commented. “Stay Healthy and safe.”
Lynette Shea commented she loved the awkward smiles on the officers.
“Great job and great advice,” she said, “Thanks for the giggles. Merry Christmas.”
