Garland, Malcolm Frederick (Mack), Baddeck
With broken hearts we announce the passing of Malcolm Frederick Garland on Dec. 12, 2020. To family, friends and acquaintances he was known as Mack. To his children he was known as Dad and he will be greatly missed. Mack had a varied career. He lumbered with his brother before entering construction, owning his own truck. He worked for the Department of Transportation for 15 full-time years building roads and operating the snowplow. In total he did 38 winters of operating the snowplow; he referred to the snow as “pennies from heaven”. Eventually he started working for private construction companies, building many roads in Cape Breton. Through his tenacity and natural talents Mack gained a reputation as a superior bulldozer operator who knew how to build a quality road. He also used those skills when plowing snow. When he left road construction, he and Viola (Mom) operated M&V Bed & Breakfast in their home for 9 years. Mack’s many years in construction gave him opportunities to form long lasting friendships and acquaintances. With his knowledge of the communities of Victoria County and the people he met over the years, he was able to introduce Conservative Political Candidates to numerous residents of the county. Mack was the one to contact when political signs had to be placed in the county for an upcoming election. He was the person to get all those signs posted throughout the county. His work with the Conservative Party earned him several awards; in 2008 Volunteer of the year for Victoria County, in 2019 a Certificate of Merit for the Conservative Party and a Lifetime Membership in the Party. After Mack and Viola closed their Bed and Breakfast they enjoyed their retirement years visiting their family and grandchildren. He also had more time to spend “perfecting” his landscaping which gave him great satisfaction. Mack is survived by his brother, Roy; sisterin-law, Kay; his children, David (Donalda), Freda (Sean), Donalda (John); grandchildren, Joshua (Minju), Jordan (Leah), Nathan (Candace), Zachery (Vanessa), Christine (Ian), Elesia (Jonathan), Kimberly; greatgrandchildren, Jaydan and Ellah-Rae. He was predeceased by his wife, Viola; his parents, David and Catherine (Katie Bell Buchanon) Garland; brothers, John (JW), Whitfield, Robert; sisters, Ethel, Isabel, Mabel and Katherine. The family would like to extend a very heartfelt thank you to the following organizations for providing superior and compassionate care to Mack and support to the family; Victoria County Memorial Hospital, Victoria County Palliative Care, Baddeck Continuing Care, Victoria County Home Support, Victoria County Hospice Society and the Paramedics with EHS. Due to Covid-19 restrictions there will be no visitation or funeral at this time. A private family graveside service will be held in St. Andrew’s Cemetery, Dec. 20, 2020. In lieu of flowers memorial donations in memory of Mack may be made to Victory County Hospice Society or Greenwood United Church. Arrangements for the late, Malcolm Garland are under the care of Sunset Funeral Co-operative. Online condolences: www.sunset-funeralco-op.com.
