AUCOIN, Helen Marie

-

Helen Marie Aucoin, age 89, passed away peacefully at the Dartmouth General Hospital on December 15, 2020. Born in Whitney Pier on September 1, 1931, she was the last surviving of eight children of the late Gertrude (Oliver) and Joseph Tubrett. Helen will be meeting up with brothers; John, Gorman, Bobby, Sonny, Eddie, sister Peggy, and lastly, her dear brother Earle who was more like a son, the ( 10th “Dory”), at the kitchen party in the great beyond. No doubt she will be telling them all “it’s time to go to bed!”. “The Grand Matriarch” of our Aucoin and Tubrett families was a wonderful Mother, Mother-in-law, Grammie, Grand-mère, Aunt, Sister-in-law, who will be truly missed. She was well known for her strength, stronger than steel at the best of times, strong opinions that were always right, her spry demeanor and zest for life. She was an avid fan of the Toronto Maple Leafs, Blue Jays, and Ohio State Buckeyes. She enjoyed bowling, chocolate milkshakes, banana splits, playing solitaire on her ipad, playing cards, Yahtzee, Rumoli, and the Horse Racing card game. From the Radar Station to Xavier Drive, onto Columbus Ohio, to Church Point, and finally home to 34 Langley, Helen and Gerry had quite a journey together for 67 years. Langley became the gathering point for Friday Happy Hours and Sunday brunches, where Helen relished her family coming together. Another special place she referred to as home is the 18 winters they spent in St. Pete’s, Florida, with their Romany Park family. It was here that Helen enjoyed numerous jam sessions, Happy Hours, potluck dinners, bike club on her adult sized tricycle, bingo, and the bowling league in which she played on two club championship teams with her ‘unconventional delivery’. She was an active member of the CWL and parishioner of Holy Redeemer, Whitney Pier, and Saint Thomas More, Dartmouth, NS. Helen is survived by the love of her life of 67 years, Gerry; her nine children (nicknamed the “Dory’s”); Patricia (Cameron Dow), Paula, Michael (Lindy), Stephen, Charles (Karen), David (Maryann), Shauna (Darren Nantes), Robert, and Susan (Kevin Schofield); 18 grandchildren (nicknamed the “Dinghy’s”); six great-grandchildren (the “Bumpers”) and likely more on the way; sister in-laws; Theresa (Gorman), Carmel (Sonny), Anne Kennedy (Ed) and honorary daughter-inlaw, Margie Tubrett (Earle) and several nieces and nephews. Her furry friends will miss her sneaking them cheese treats and laying at her warm feet. There is now an empty space at the head of the table which will be impossible to fill. The Family wishes to thank the DGH amazing staff for their excellent care and attention during Helen’s stay. Cremation has taken place and there will be no visitation or funeral at this time. A memorial service at St. Thomas More church will be announced at a later date. Memorial donations may be made to the Heart and Stroke Foundation, a local food bank, or a charity of your choice. Online condolences may be made by visiting www.atlanticfunerahomes.com (Dartmouth Chapel).
