GOUTHRO, James Bernard “Bernie” Birch Grove

It is with heavy hearts that we the family of Bernie Gouthro, age 58, announce his passing on Tuesday, January 5, 2021 at the CBRH, Sydney after a long and courageous battle with cancer, surrounded by his loving family. Born in Glace Bay, Bernie was the son of the late Michael “Mick” and Jessie (Smith) Gouthro. He was a family man who was known for his sense of humour and big smile. Bernie was very passionate about his chosen career as a mechanic where he met many friends he called his buddies. He enjoyed his last working years at Merrit Muffler in Sydney. Bernie loved the outdoors and truly enjoyed going four wheeling (ATV) with the boys; BBQ’s and bonfires were also very important to him as they brought family & friends together. Left to mourn his passing are his wife, Alice (Crummey) Gouthro; her son, Kenny; his daughter, Holly (Peter), who was the apple of his eye; son, Andrew and stepson, Lennie (Alice). Also surviving are grandsons, Landon, Lennox, Lochlan, Luke, Nova, Jude; brother, Mike (Agnes); sisters, Anna (Reggie) Slaunwhite, Brenda (Tony); foster brother, Reggie; nieces, Kathleen, Amanda, Jessica, Shakira; nephews, Jason “His best Bud” and Stanley. Cremation has taken place with burial to be held at a later date in St. James Cemetery, Gardiner Mines. The family extend a sincere thank you to the Cancer Center & Palliative Care Unit, CBRH, Sydney and the VON. Memorial donations in memory of Bernie may be made to the Cancer Center, CBRH, Sydney.
