Sydney family builds giant snowman after last weekend’s storm

SYDNEY — Move over, Frosty,` and make way for Mr. Steel Man.

That’s the name a south end Sydney family had given a giant snowman they created in the front yard of their home on Canso Drive following the weekend’s snowstorm.

Charlene Morrison said she, her husband Kevin and 11-year-old son Colby decided to celebrate the first significant snowfall Saturday by building a simple snowman. However, by the time they finished three days later, it was nearly 11 feet tall, she said.

“We kept going and going,” she said with a laugh. “We just enjoyed being outside and using up the snow that was given to us.”

Colby named the snowman after his Sydney Steeler minor hockey team and they used pucks for buttons and hockey sticks for its arms. But finding other pieces of his Steelersthemed blue-white-and-black outfit was a bit of a challenge.

Charlene said they tied two large tablecloths together to make its scarf and they used a rubber mat and some hockey tape to fashion an enormous top hat, which Colby needed to climb a ladder to place on its head.

“It was pretty fun,” he explained.

Unfortunately, the recent mild weather has started to take a toll on Mr. Steel Man.

“With the weather, he’s not doing so well these days,” she said. “He’s starting to tilt and melt away — we’re hoping for some more snow so we can start fixing him up.”

Charlene said although Mr. Steel Man won’t last forever, the memories they made will.

She said their creation has generated some interest from passersby and even motivated their neighbours to make a snowman — albeit not one quite so large.

“The neighbours across the street — two teenaged girls who don’t normally do that sort of thing — were so inspired by our gigantic snowman that they made a small one in their front yard,” Charlene said, adding that she hopes other families will do the same.

“Give it a try — have some fun with it. It was definitely one thing that COVID didn’t control — we had control over the snow, we had control over what we wanted to do. We didn’t expect it to get that big but we had lots of fun doing it.”
