Cape Breton prospects update for first half of the 2020-21 season

SYDNEY — Despite the COVID-19 pandemic, Cape Breton Eagles prospects have been on the ice this season representi­ng their respective teams in under-18 and junior ‘A’ play.

Sixteen of the team’s prospects from the 2019 and 2020 Quebec Major Junior Hockey League Entry Draft and American Draft have seen game action this season with the majority being in Atlantic Canada.

Here’s how the Eagles prospects have fared during the first half of the 2020-21 season.

2019 DRAFT PICS

(Not playing major junior)

• Kenzie MacPhail — sixth-round pick, No. 102 overall. The 17-year-old goaltender earned a spot on the Miramichi Timberwolv­es roster for the 2020-21 season. The Inverness product has appeared in three games with the Maritime Junior Hockey League team, posting a 2-00-0 record along with a 2.73 goals-against-average and a .905 save percentage.

• Blake Deacon — ninthround pick, No. 148 overall. The centre is currently playing with the Valley Wildcats of the Maritime Junior Hockey League. The 18-yearold Port Williams, N.S., native has seven assists in 12 games.

• Jacob Christie — ninthround pick, No. 156 overall. The 18-year-old defenceman is suiting up for the Truro Bearcats of the Maritime Junior Hockey League. The Timberlea, N.S., product has three assists in 14 games.

• Alex Cormier — 10thround pick, No. 174 overall. The Dieppe, N.B., native is playing this season with the Grand Falls Rapids of the Maritime Junior Hockey League. The 17-year-old forward has two goals in eight games.

• Tanner Greatorex — 12th-round pick, No. 210 overall. The defenceman earned a spot of the Truro Bearcats roster for the 202021 season. In 12 games with the club, the 17-year-old Pictou County product has no points and two penalty minutes.

• Kian Bell — 13th-round pick, No. 228 overall. The Fall River, N.S., native has been one of the more impressive Eagles prospects in the system this season. The Steele Subaru Majors forward is currently tied for the Nova Scotia Under-18 Major Hockey League’s lead in points (17) and goals (11) through the first 11 games of the season.

• Jack Cashen — 14thround pick, No. 246 overall. The goaltender, who wasn’t drafted by an MHL team, is currently playing with the Sydney Mitsubishi Rush. He’s appeared in two games with the team and has a 2-0-0-0 record with a 1.50 goals-against-average and a .943 save percentage. He also served as the Eagles backup for a road trip to Saint John in October.

Note: Prospects Bodie Nobes, Mathis Demers, Marc-Antoine Pouliot, Luke Holyfield and Conor Sullivan have not yet played this season.

2020 DRAFT PICKS

(Not playing major junior)

• Colby Huggan — thirdround pick, No. 48 overall. The Charlottet­own product has appeared in six games with the Charlottet­own Knights of the New Brunswick/Prince Edward Island Under-18 Major Hockey League. So far this season, the 16-year-old has two goals and eight points.

• Jacob Long — fifthround pick, No. 89 overall.

The defenceman is currently playing with the Fredericto­n Caps (NBPEI18MHL). In nine games with the team, the Edmundston native has two goals and five points. He’s also played three games with the Edmundston Blizzard of the MHL.

• Kiefer Lyons — fifthround pick, No. 91 overall. The 17-year-old has been the most productive Eagles prospect this season. In nine games with the Saint John Vitos, the Quispamsis, N.B., forward has 14 goals and 21 points. He also appeared in one game with the Campbellto­n Tigers of the MHL but had no points in the contest.

• Matheas Elles — sixthround pick, No. 109 overall.

The Halifax defenceman is currently playing with the Halifax McDonalds. In eight contests this season, the 16-year-old has a goal and two points along with eight penalty minutes.

• Noah Comeau — ninthround pick, No. 163 overall. The defenceman is back with the Cole Harbour Wolfpack for the 2020-21 season. In eight games to date, the 16-year-old Dartmouth product has two assists.

• Nolan Stewart — 10thround pick, No. 181 overall. The 16-year-old has appeared in six games for the Charlottet­own Knights this season, posting one assist and 22 penalty minutes. The Montague, P.E.I., native has also appeared in three games with the Eastern Maniacs of the Island Junior Hockey League (Junior ‘B’), posting one goal and two penalty minutes.

• Noah Harvey — 11thround pick, No. 199 overall. The goaltender is currently a member of the Steele Subaru Majors and has appeared in five games with the team. The 16-year-old has a 2-30-0 record along with a 3.14 goals-against-average and a .897 save percentage.

• Liam Trenholm — 12th-round pick, No. 216. The Port Hood native is suiting up for his hometown Cape Breton West Islanders. In nine games with the team, the 16-year-old defenceman has recorded two goals in nine games.

• Reese Allen — 13thround pick, No. 235 overall. The forward is currently playing with the Sydney Mitsubishi Rush. In 10 games with the team, the 16-yearold South Bar product has three goals and seven points.

• Beanie Richter — second-round pick, No. 33 overall at QMJHL American Draft. The son of former NHLer Mike Richter has played one game this season with the Penticton Vees of the British Columbia Hockey League. He had one assist in the game.

Note: Alexis Bonefon, Nicolas Hogue, Olivier Houde, Kevin McKenna and Connor Welsh have not played any games this season.
