Scott Milanovich resigns as CFL’s Edmonton head coach
EDMONTON — The Canadian Football League team with no name just became the team with no head coach, too.
After a grand total of 13 months and zero games played due to the cancellation of the 2020 season, Scott Milanovich has stepped down from his position as head coach of the Edmonton Foot ball Team.
Or, as one Twitter user put it: “Scott Milanovich. Two Years. Two team names. 0-0 record.”
Over the noon hour Monday, an announcement from the club made official rumours that had been circulating on social media and within CFL circles across the country that Milanovich resigned from his post as head coach and offensive co ordi nator in order to pursue NFL opportunities.
“Scott informed me this morning that he was resigning as the head coach of the Edmonton Football Team to accept a position in the NFL,” Edmonton general manager and vice-president of football operations said in a press release. “It's disappointing that he was never able to coach a game for our organization due to the pandemic “We wish Scott and his family all the best in his future endeavours.”
The search for a new head coach, the release went on to say, begins immediately.
On Monday morning, TSN's Matthew Scianitti reported on social media: “Hearing from CFL sources Scott Milanovich has resigned as Edmonton's head coach.”
Milanovich was announced as Edmonton's 22nd head coach on Dec. 12, 2019, following the dismissal of Jason Maas, who held the position for the previous four seasons.
Under Maas, Edmonton went 39-33 (.542) with a winning record in each of his first two seasons. By the third, however, a 9-9 record saw the team miss the playoffs in a 2018 season that culminated in the Grey Cup being played in their very own Commonwealth Stadium
