County, Glace Bay, New Waterford win provincial titles

SYDNEY — Three Cape Breton teams took provincial titles across the Canso Causeway over the weekend following Hockey Nova Scotia’s Day of Champions at the Rath Eastlink Community Centre in Truro.

The Cape Breton County Islanders, Glace Bay Miners and New Waterford Sharks each won their respective titles.

Cape Breton County capped off an impressive undefeated season, doubling the Western Valley Spartans 4-2 in the under-11 ‘AA’ division.

Nathan MacKinnon scored twice while Max Gouthro and Hunter Orkish added single markers for the Islanders.

Bryce Brooks and Luke Woodworth replied with goals for the Spartans.

Cape Breton County’s

Trace Tanner picked up the win in goal. Western Valley’s Felix Agombar was tagged with the loss. Statistics were not available.

Meanwhile, in the under13 ‘A’ division, Glace Bay downed the TASA Ducks 5-2.

Jonah Surette had two goals and an assist while Lucas Evasuk-MacDonald, Junior MacNeil and Drew McPhee also netted goals for the Miners.

Ethan Youden and Hudsen Anderson replied with goals for the Ducks.

Glace Bay’s Landon MacLeod earned the win. TASA’s Luc Boutilier shouldered the loss. Statistics were not available.

In the under-13 ‘B’ final,

New Waterford beat the Bedford Blues Gold 6-3.

Jasper Gaudet scored twice and added an assist while Benjamin Peterson, Hunter Jackson, Xander Cormier and Dylan Gillis chipped in with single goals for the Sharks.

Avery Gauthier, Elayna Doucet and Mitchell Jonasson netted goals for the Blues.

New Waterford’s Brooke Baldwin picked up the win. Bedford’s Shia DunfordWoo­ds was the losing goaltender. Statistics were not available.

The Sydney Steelers and Cape Breton West Islanders also competed in the Day of Champions on Saturday.

In the under-11 ‘A’ division, Sydney was downed 12-3 by the Cole Harbour Wings.

Matthew Greer scored five times while Hunter Grant had two goals and an assist and Bennett Thibideau notched two goals. Cole Nelson, Declan O’Neill and Dustin Decoste added single markers for the Wings.

Henry MacDonald, Elliott Gillis and Luke Mills answered with goals for the Steelers.

Cole Harbour’s Kameron Awalt earned the win. Sydney’s Levi Spencer was tagged with the loss. Statistics were not provided.

Cape Breton West was edged 7-6 by the TASA Ducks Black in the under-11 ‘B’ championsh­ip game with the game-winner coming with only eight seconds to play in regulation time.

Ben Reeves scored three goals and added an assist while Ethan Zinck notched two goals and added three assists. Dylan Perkins and Reid Shore also found the back of the net for the Ducks.

Isyc Evans scored twice while Ordell MacLellan, Cullen MacLellan, Ben Swinkels and William VanZutphen also fired home goals for the Islanders.

TASA’s Liam McKinnon was the winning goaltender. Cape Breton West’s Ryder Fortune was the losing netminder. Statistics were not provided.

Day of Champions wraps up the 2023-24 minor hockey season. The 2024-25 season will begin in September for most organizati­ons.
