City woman wins $20.9M in lottery
A chance decision to buy a lottery ticket during a stop to pick up milk has made an Edmonton woman the second largest Lotto 6-49 winner in the capital.
Bogumila Mroczkowski, 58, made the uncharacteristic choice to buy a ticket for the April 30 Lotto 6-49 draw while stopping at the Shoppers Drug Mart, 4940 137 Ave., for milk.
“I don’t have a regular habit of buying tickets,” said Mroczkowski, who has already resigned from her job of 26 years with Alberta Hospital’s food services.
The mother of two grown children checked her tickets at least 20 times, including once just before her scheduled interview Tuesday with the Alberta Gaming and Liquor Commission, to make sure it was a winner.
Her husband was equally skeptical.
“He didn’t believe it,” she said. “I think he still doesn’t believe.”
At first, she thought she had won a few thousand dollars. Instead, her ticket was worth just shy of $21 million.
Her initial plans are to help out family and maybe travel.
“Maybe Alaska, maybe Hawaii,” she said. “I guess I can go anywhere.”
Still a little in shock, she believes the reality will set in soon.
“Maybe when I start shopping, it’s going to be real.”
The win is the 19th largest 6-49 jackpot in Alberta and the second largest in Edmonton.
