WHY THE KIDS WHO DANCED FOR TRUMP WANT TO SUE HIM

- Philip Bump, The Washington Post

1 STAR-SPANGLED

Within hours of their performance at a Donald Trump rally in Pensacola, Fla., in January, the U.S.A. Freedom Kids — three preteen girls in star-spangled outfits who lip-synched an update to Over There — were a sensation.

2 LAWSUIT THREAT

Now, though, the relationship is different. Jeff Popick, father of the smallest Freedom Kid, told The Washington Post that he plans to file a lawsuit against the campaign for violating its agreement with the group. Popick admits the agreement was not written down, but involves a series of promises from agents of the Trump campaign which he says were then broken.

3 ‘COMPLETE CHAOS’

Popick says when he asked for $2,500 to perform in Pensacola, the campaign offered a table where the group could pre-sell albums instead. When they arrived, there was no table, just “complete chaos.” And he says the campaign ignored his calls afterwards.

4 FOOL ME TWICE?

The Trump campaign did eventually call, says Popick, this time to ask the Kids to perform at a rally in Iowa. With the promise that the exposure would be “huge.” Popick agreed, and the kids and their parents flew to Chicago and drove to Iowa. But already the plans had changed. The cost of the flights, rental car and hotel were all absorbed by Popick.

5 ‘DO THE RIGHT THING’

“I’m doing this because I think they have to do the right thing,” Popick says. “And if this means having to go through the court system to enforce them doing the right thing, then that’s what I have to do.”
