CFL POWER RANKINGS WEEK 6

- Kirk Penton

1. (2) CALGARY

The No. 1 offensive line is back together, quarterback Bo Levi Mitchell has plenty of time in the pocket, and it doesn’t look like the defence took a major hit due to Rich Stubler’s offseason departure. The Stamps might just be the healthiest team in the league.

2. (1) OTTAWA

They almost beat the Roughriders using their thirdstring quarterback, former North Dakota State gunslinger Brock Jensen, after Trevor Harris went down with a knee injury. The positive news is Henry Burris appears to be close to returning to action, which would give Harris time to heal.

3. (3) HAMILTON

It was a tale of two halves for the Tabbies against the Eskimos; they looked horrible in the first and unbeatable in the second en route to erasing a 25-point deficit. Backup quarterback Jeremiah Masoli completed a CFL record 23 consecutive passes in the game.

4. (5) B.C.

The Leos, no matter how they’re getting it done, are winning early on this season, and will be nice and rested for their big West Division showdown on Friday in Calgary. They lost two starters in the Saskatchewan game, though, in receiver Nick Moore and defensive back T.J. Lee.

5. (4) EDMONTON

It becomes clear with each passing game that the Eskimos have a great offence and a lousy defence. Even though Mike Reilly and Co. didn’t score a point after taking a 31-6 lead over the Ticats early in the third quarter, the defence should have been able to hold on to that huge advantage. They couldn’t do it, though, and they need to get the defence figured out in a hurry if they’re going to be in the hunt for first place in the West Division.

6. (6) TORONTO

The Boatmen won their first game at BMO Field on Monday night, but it was against the injury depleted Alouettes and they lost their starting quarterback, Ricky Ray, to a knee injury that could keep him out of the lineup for more than a month. Considering how well Scott Milanovich develops quarterbacks, Logan Kilgore might become the next Anthony Calvillo.

7. (8) SASKATCHEWAN

GM and head coach Chris Jones got his first Rider win, and they had to get a 53-yard field goal from their young kicker, Tyler Crapigna, to do it. Backup quarterback Mitchell Gale showed he has ability, but the offence almost gave the game away through bad snaps and fumbles in the fourth quarter.

8. (7) WINNIPEG

The losing keeps happening in the Manitoba capital, and now No. 1 quarterback Drew Willy is benched because of it. Matt Nichols will start against the Eskimos as the 1-4 Bombers attempt to win at Commonwealth Stadium for the first time since 2006. The Blue and Gold also lost four starters to injury in last week’s loss against Calgary, making the mountain even higher to climb.

9. (9) MONTREAL

The Alouettes are too beat up to win games these days, and now they’re facing fatigue and the potential for more injuries. Monday’s loss in Toronto was the start of three games in 11 days. QB Kevin Glenn is taking an abnormal number of hits for someone who gets rid of the ball quickly, too.
