Home in Ekota wins 2016 Front Yards In Bloom Journal Readers’ Choice Award

- RYAN GARNER

The yards have been viewed and people have voted. After examining the six finalists, judging each one for its creativity and curb appeal, readers selected Aline Jeroncic’s home at 6915 21 Ave. in Ekota for the 2016 Front Yards In Bloom Edmonton Journal Readers’ Choice Award.

Jeroncic and dozens of other local gardeners were recognized at the 2016 Edmonton In Bloom Awards, held at the Citadel Theatre on Thursday.

Thousands of Edmonton’s finest front yards were narrowed down to six finalists for the award, and the readers’ choice poll received more than 700 votes before determining a winner.

The Edmonton Journal has been associated with the Front Yards In Bloom program since the competition began in 1999, highlighting the city’s most beautiful spaces. The program continues to inspire interest in gardening and neighbourhood beautification by encouraging residents to nominate their neighbours’ attractive front yards.

“Front Yards In Bloom is a terrific event that adds to the beauty of our community and gets people involved,” said Edmonton city councillor Mike Nickel at the Front Yards In Bloom program’s introductory event in May.

“It’s a great way for people to recognize their neighbours for their hard work, getting their hands dirty and brightening their neighbourhood.”

The Edmonton In Bloom Awards unofficially mark the end of summer, as gardeners celebrate their accomplishments and prepare for fall and winter’s arrival.

Thanks to each of the finalists for their participation and all those who took the time to vote for their favourite.
