See you next month
September has a melody all its own. For young students, it’s the sound of the loss of freedom. For parents of young students, it’s the sound of emancipation. Back to School!
For some, Sept. 1 has a Jan. 1 feeling (without the bone-chilling cold).
September offers a “New Year’s” kind of optimism.
September rings in a time to return to the comfort of routine. It’s time to return to church after summer holidays; to sign up children for programs; to enrol in a small group Bible study; or for a “kickoff ” to new experiences of faith.
Could this September be the moment for you to consider going back to church? So where do you start? How do you pick a church that’s right for you and your family?
You can often get a good feel for the church by visiting its website. Most churches will provide information about how the church got started, doctrinal beliefs, a statement of faith, plus information about the ministries and outreaches they offer.
Before visiting, make a checklist of the most important characteristics about the church you hope to find.
What type of attire would I be most comfortable wearing to church? In some churches T-shirts, jeans, and even shorts, are acceptable. In others, a suit and tie or dress would be more appropriate.
List specific questions you would want to ask and contact the church before visiting. For example, if youth programs are important to you, put that on your list and ask specifically for information about them. Some churches will even mail you an information packet or visitor’s packet, so be sure to ask for these when you call.
Choose a church and then after visiting at least three times, ask yourself these questions: Did I feel welcomed and accepted? Did I feel like people were expecting me? Were they glad I was there? Was the church a place I can connect with God? Did I learn about the Bible? Was it a place where fellowship and community are encouraged? Does the church reach out locally and in other parts of the world?
The bells are ringing. It’s time to get back!
