GEF Seniors Housing acquires land for Sakaw Terrace

Ambitious project set to open in November 2018

Aug. 5, 2016, saw the o cial deed to a surplus school site along Mill Woods Road South and 58 Street signed and awarded to GEF Seniors Housing, which is now preparing to break ground on its newest building project, Sakaw Terrace.

“Sakaw Terrace is going to be our most ambitious building project,” said GEF Seniors Housing CEO Raymond Swonek.

The building will feature more than 150 suites and will include above and below ground parking, a theatre room, a salon, two outdoor courtyards and a community greenhouse.

The $42 million housing project has been in its planning phase since 2015. Sakaw Terrace will see constructi­on begin in late 2016 and continue throughout the next couple of years, with applicatio­ns for suites being accepted tentativel­y in October 2017, and an opening date set in November 2018. With the deed to the land signed, Swonek is eager to break ground this winter.

“In the next 15 years, we’re going to see more than a million seniors living in Alberta,” Swonek said. “Sakaw Terrace is going to be the first step in the right direction to making sure no senior ever has to worry about where they’re going to live.”

GEF Seniors Housing is Alberta’s largest not-for-profit and registered charity providing a•ordable housing options to low- and moderate-income seniors. They currently own nine buildings and manage more than 30 other buildings across Edmonton. More than 3,500 seniors in Alberta’s Capital City call a GEF Seniors Housing building home.
