Traffic-enforcemen­t blitz nets 2,000 violations — one involving a live ferret

A 24-hour traffic enforcemen­t event by Edmonton police resulted in 2,442 violations, including a distracted driving ticket for a motorist wearing a live ferret around their neck while cruising along Whyte Avenue.

Police issued 90 additional distracted driving tickets during the enforcemen­t period from Feb. 15 to Feb. 16. Speeding tickets made up the majority of the violations with officers issuing 1,886 tickets.

Officers issued tickets for two vehicles that police say appeared to be racing near the James MacDonald Bridge. The vehicles were travelling 146 km/h and 130 km/h in a 60km/h zone.

There were also 10 Criminal Code offences, police said.

One vehicle stop resulted in the arrest of a female who had 30 outstandin­g warrants.

During another vehicle stop, officers found that the vehicle and licence plate were reported stolen.

Traffic Safety Act violations, including seat belt infraction­s and red light violations, accounted for 456 violations.
