Police issue warning after sex offender who preyed on boys returns
A convicted sex offender whose crimes against young boys date back to 1992 is back living in the Edmonton area, warn police.
Curtis Allan Poburan, 48, is a high risk to commit another sexual offence against someone under the age of 16 while in the community, said police in a Thursday statement.
He is about five-foot-11, and weighs 175 pounds.
Poburan, who will be supervised while on probation, has been placed on a series of court ordered conditions including:
Refrain from engaging in or ■ attempting to engage in any activity with any person under the age of 16.
Must not possess any child pornography. ■
Must not be within 50 metres ■ around places where children under the age of 16 are reasonably expected to be present, including school ground, daycare centres, public parks, public swimming pools, recreational centres or community centres.
Must not enter any residence of ■ any child under the age of 16 years, unless in the immediate presence of an adult guardian or parent of such child.
Must not seek or maintain any ■ employment or becoming a volunteer in a capacity that involves being in a position of trust or authority toward any person under the age of 16.
Must not be in possession of any ■ firearms, including replica firearms and pellet guns.
Police issued a similar warning about Poburan when he was paroled back in 2002. He was then said by police to go to extraordinary lengths to associate with young boys.
Poburan’s offending history includes a 1992 charge of having sexual contact with a 12-year-old boy. In 1997, he was jailed for fondling an eight-year-old boy to whom he gave a ride while working as an ice cream vendor.
He was released in May 1999, and while on probation he breached his conditions by having contact with children. He posed as a photographer working for a boys’ clothing line. When police arrested Poburan in December 2001, they found him in possession of items identical to those worn by police, including a gun belt, holster, imitation pistol and handcuffs.
