CHBA-ER 2017 Awards honour top builders
Edmonton’s best builders recognized at awards gala
Whether draped with leis or dressed in Bermuda shorts, the best of Edmonton’s residential construction industry got a taste of the tropics and took home some hardware at the Canadian Home Builders’ Association — Edmonton Region (CHBA-ER) 2017 Awards on Excellence in Housing Gala on March 18.
Attendees were transported far from the cold winter wind, as a tropical theme welcomed more than 1,700 industry professionals at the Shaw Conference Centre, complete with fire dancers and tiki torches.
More than 60 awards were handed out, recognizing achievements in home building, design, renovation, sales and marketing.
Some of Edmonton’s finest in the home construction industry added to their already impressive trophy cases. Aquarian Renovations was named Renovator of the Year, recapturing the award after winning it in 2011, 2013 and 2015.
“Sometimes consumers think that we only handle big projects, but we handle small projects as well, and we also do historical homes,” said Marie Soprovich, president and CEO of Aquarian Renovations. “We have worked with architects outside our office, and it’s fun to tackle these projects and work with existing designs.”
Aquarian’s renovation prize holds some added prestige this year, as market conditions have increased the number of renovators vying for consumer attention.
“I think there’s more competition in the renovation world than there ever has been before. It’s been a tough year for many people in the industry as construction has slowed down and people are looking to keep working,” Soprovich said.
“I feel very grateful and proud of my team. We have the same core group that’s been here for years, and we take great pride in the work we do and working with the CHBA, which has made a tremendous contribution to our industry.”
Vicky’s Homes also continues to be a mainstay on the award stage, winning Builder of the Year – Small Volume. The prize follows up two awards at the CHBA National Awards for Housing Excellence in May 2016 — Best Home 3,001 to 4,000 Square Feet for the company’s Vittorio show home in Cameron Heights, and Best Interior Decoration.
“Our show home in Cameron Heights won on the local, provincial and national level, so we’re thrilled at all the success and recognition that we’ve received,” said Vicky Kujundzic, president of Vicky’s Homes. “Hopefully we can stay on top and win Builder of the Year two years in a row.”
The upscale home builder also won Single Family Any Style Model $800,000 to $999,999 and Best Estate Home over $1 Million at the CHBA-ER gala.
“We strategize to determine which categories would work for each home,” Kujundzic said. “We’ve been finalists and won awards at the top end of the homebuilding categories, but we’re looking to branch out and build some smaller homes to expand our reach to keep us from competing against ourselves. We love what we do, we have a great time doing it, and it’s a privilege to be recognized by the CHBA for our efforts.”
Homes by Avi won Builder of the Year, Single Family – Large Volume for the fourth consecutive year, keeping its stranglehold on the award and further cementing its reputation as one of the province’s best builders. The company was also awarded a customer choice award for Single Family – Large Volume.
“When we sell a house to a customer it is their dream home; they’re trusting us with their life savings, so we need to focus on making the customer happy,” said Homes by Avi president Alice Mateyko. “It’s not easy to get up there and it’s harder to stay on top, but it’s our customer service — and our people — that keeps us on top.”
In addition to winning awards for Best Design Centre/Show Room, Best Multi-Family Apartment Style $250,000 to $325,000 and Best Apartment Building; Streetside Developments was named Builder of the Year – Multi Family.
