Warrant issued after man found dead

An Edmonton man found dead in his Dovercourt home Saturday with a fatal neck wound was “a heart” of his family.

Frederick John Dunn, 67, was killed between May 12 and 13, Edmonton police say. Homicide detectives are in charge of the investigation and have issued an arrest warrant for Walter James Jenkins, 34.

Gordon Dunn said his brother Fred was expected at a family gathering. When he didn’t show up, Gordon Dunn went to his brother’s home near 135th Street and 124B Avenue. He said he found a door kicked in and his brother’s body lying downstairs.

Though Fred Dunn lived alone, his brother said he was friends with everybody.

“He was always running away from his housework. He always wanted to be with his friends,” Gordon Dunn said. “He had to be around people. That’s how he was.”

Fred Dunn was the oldest of four siblings, two brothers and two sisters. The brothers bought a duplex together in 1980 before Fred moved into his own house in 1994.

“I was the smart kid of the family and Freddy was a heart. He loved everybody. Everybody loved him,” Gordon said.

“He was my big brother and I was his big brother,” he added.

An autopsy Tuesday found the cause of death was an incised wound in the neck.

Investigators do not believe Fred Dunn and the man they are looking for in connection with the case knew each other.

Police said Jenkins, who also goes by J.J., may be in the Rimbey area. Police said Jenkins now has a shaved head.

Staff Sgt. Bill Clark said in a Tuesday news release that police need to speak to anybody who saw or spoke to Fred Dunn in the days leading up to May 12 and 13.

Dunn’s death is Edmonton’s 19th homicide of 2017.
