Jubilee Park Campground opens a pair of new comfort cabins

- SCOTT LEITCH

Edmontonians without a tent but wanting to get out camping have a new option at Wizard Lake.

Jubilee Park Campground held a grand opening Wednesday for two new comfort camping cabins, the first of their kind in the Leduc region.

Dean Ohnysty, director of parks and recreation for Leduc County, hopes to attract new customers to the campground, about a 40-minute drive south of Edmonton. He thinks the new sites will be attractive to seniors, young families and new Canadians.

“We know this will invite a new clientele and a new customer to our campground and to our region,” said Ohnysty.

The cabins, renting for $90 a night, come with a double bed, three single beds and many of the amenities a family would need to stay the night. There’s a barbecue, camping chairs, a wood stove and lanterns. They come stocked with firewood. Campers will need to bring their own bedding, food, cooking utensils and toiletries. There are pike and perch in the lake, so don’t forget a fishing rod. There’s no electricity on site.

Comfort camping accommodations have been popular in provincial and national parks in Alberta and across Canada. A short drive farther, Pigeon Lake Provincial Park rents yurts, canvas-walled tent-like buildings with beds inside. Elk Island National Park recently installed five oTENTik camping units, canvass-walled cabins similar to the yurts and comfort camping cabins.

County, which invested $50,000 to build the two cabins. Some money also came from a sponsorship with Canadian Tire Leduc.

With both cabins already booked for a handful of upcoming weekends, Ohnysty is confident they will pay for themselves in five to seven years.

Between the new cabins and traditional RV and tenting areas, Jubilee Park has 111 sites. It is open between the May and September long weekends of each year.
