GOOGLE SCANS AN OUTBACK ICON
Armchair travellers will soon be able to trample among one of Australia’s most mystical and ancient sites — without leaving home or offending local sensibilities.
Google has announced that it is bringing its Street View mapping service to Uluru, or Ayers Rock, the sacred red heart of Australia’s vast Outback.
The 348-metre-high monolith can now be explored in 360-degree splendour from any desktop computer, smartphone or tablet after a project that was two years in the making, the Sydney Morning Herald said.
However, you won’t find views from the top of the rock as Google says it was careful to respect the laws of the Anangu, the traditional owners of Uluru national park, as well as state and national governments.
The Street View experience offers audio guides featuring stories and songs.
