A man was lying dead in a north Edmonton strip-mall parking lot when a passerby found him and called police at about 12:30 a.m. Sunday.

Police said the citizen came across the deceased person and another man with signs of trauma near 125 Street and 132 Avenue. The surviving man was taken to hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.

If the death is confirmed as a homicide, it will be the city’s 26th of the year and the fifth in 11 days.

Halfway through 2017, Edmonton’s homicide total has climbed to 25, the same number of homicides the city had experienced at the midway point of 2011, which was a record-breaking year for homicides.

Speaking at a news conference held last week after the city’s fourth homicide in nine days, Edmonton Police Service Deputy Chief Brian Simpson said that although the number of deaths so far this year is “high,” it is nothing the city hasn’t seen before.

Citing a study of Edmonton homicide data from 2007 to 2012 by MacEwan University professor Sandy Jung, Simpson said three factors Jung found present in many of the homicides over the research period hold true with what’s happening in 2017: most victims were known to the suspects, substance abuse is a common factor and most of the alleged offenders have a criminal history.

“As we’ve commented in the past, this research demonstrates that not everyone faces the same level of risk as it relates to being a victim or a perpetrator of a violent crime or homicide,” Simpson said.

A map of Edmonton shows that violent, fatal crime hasn’t plagued any one particular neighbourhood or area. The locations of homicides have ranged from inside homes to parking lots to a playground.

Police said guns were used in nine of the homicides and knives were the weapon used in nine other cases.

Of the 15 cases that have been cleared by police, the accused was a stranger to the victim in only three of the cases. on March 6. Police charged Timothy John Crowe with second-degree murder, but haven’t released the cause of Scheinmann’s death.

Vitaly Savin, 55, was fatally shot by a police officer conducting a traffic stop on March 9. EPS does not count his death as a homicide, a departure from the force’s previous practice of categorizing officer-involved shooting deaths as homicides.

Benedicto George, 25, was found dead of gunshot wounds in a northwest Edmonton playground on March 26. Sara Crane, 21, was stabbed to death during an altercation in a duplex in the Calder neighbourhood on March 31. Brandon Provencher, 19, was stabbed in the chest near the Coliseum LRT transit station on April 11. Two teenagers have been charged in connection to his death.

Kathy Dickout, 53, died of stab wounds on Easter Monday. Her adult son, Jason Dickout, is charged in her death.

Anthony Raine, a 19-month-old toddler, was found dead outside a north Edmonton church. His father, Joey Crier, and Crier’s girlfriend, Tasha Mack, are charged in the boy’s death.

Dustin Horsethief, 34, died following a machete attack at an Edmonton apartment that ended with the arrest of two blood-covered suspects.

Jake Myles Skrepnek-Rey, 22 was found stabbed to death behind a home in the Allendale neighbourhood following an altercation on April 30.

An 11-day-old infant died of a fatal methamphetamine dose on March 29. Her mother, Michelle Rice, was charged with second-degree murder in May.

Jade Belcourt, 18, died after being hit by a pickup truck that drove through a fence in a yard on May 22. Police charged a man with murder, then later dropped the charges and said the investigation is ongoing.

Frederick John Dunn, 67, died of a fatal neck wound and was found in his north Edmonton home after he failed to show up for a family gathering.

Justin Nicholas Allen, 28, was fatally shot as he walked out of a pub on June 1. Police say a fight was going on between other parties outside the bar, and that Allen wasn’t involved.

Tomas Echeverria-Quintana, 18, was suffering a gunshot wound when he was dropped off at the Royal Alexandra Hospital on June 7. He died of his injuries.

Abdullahi Nur-Abdulle, 22, died after a parking lot shooting in broad daylight on June 11. Seeking information, police released photos of male suspects brandishing guns at the scene.

Clinton John Bluecloud, 29, and another man were found injured by police responding to a report of a fight in Londonderry Heights apartments on June 15. Bluecloud later died of his injuries.

An as yet unidentified man was stabbed to death early June 16 in an alley near 50 Street and 118 Avenue. As of Sunday evening, no arrests had been announced.
