Hit the highway with Jay

- MELISSA HANK

What’s the first thing you think of when you hear the name Jay Leno? The Tonight Show? Absolutely — he had the gig for 22 years. But a close second would likely be cars. The comedian has a notoriously robust collection of automobiles, launched a line of car-care products last month and on Wednesday debuts Season 3 of his CNBC series Jay Leno’s Garage.

Each episode sees Leno hit the road to find odd and exciting vehicles, and the odd and exciting people who care for them. There’s also a mix of stunts, challenges, reviews and celebrity interviews.

The season premiere is an ode to cars built in America, by Americans and using all American parts. Plus, Leno talks to former U.S. president George W. Bush about his famous Ford pickup, challenges Wanda Sykes to a race, rides with Mike & Molly star Billy Gardell and takes a gander at comedian Gabriel Iglesias’s Smokey and the Bandit Trans-Am.

Immediately following it is an episode dedicated to huge four-wheelers. Leno talked to The Advocate about balancing his rigorous standup comedy schedule with his passion for cars.

“There’s an old, sort of corny expression that the heart is happiest when the head and the hands work together,” he said. “When you go onstage, you talk and you’re using your head, and then in the daytime, you work with your hands and fix something, and it makes for a more rounded sort of environment, I think.”

OH BROTHER

Is there a better way to spend the precious few warm summer months we have in Canada than by watching a bunch of strangers get crazy in a secluded house? Apparently, for many TV fans, no. Always a ratings heavyweight, Big Brother returns Wednesday for its 19th season on Global and CBS. And there’s yet another twist: The Den of Temptation, to which viewers will send a house guest. There, they’ll get an enticing and potentially gamechanging offer.

“There are so many different paths the game could take this season depending on what the Houseguests choose to do,” executive producer Rich Meehan said. “With so many unknowns, we are excited to see how it all plays out.”

URBAN BEHAVIOUR

From comedian James Davis, the new series Hood Adjacent with James Davis debuts tonight on Much. Each episode uses comedy to probe urban issues and share Davis’s perspective on the world he grew up in — which, as the title suggests, is next to a violence-prone neighbourhood. Davis is best known for appearing on BET’s The Real Husbands of Hollywood and his Comedy Central Snapchat series Swag-A-Saurus With James Davis.
