One man has died and two others are in hospital following a shooting in downtown Edmonton early Sunday morning.

Edmonton Police Service acting duty officer Insp. James Vanderland said three people were shot around 1 a.m. in the area of 116 Street and Jasper Avenue.

Vanderland said the shooting occurred outside, but could not say whether there was a connection to a nearby nightclub.

The deceased man and injured woman left the scene in a black SUV to rush to the hospital, police said.

Vanderland said the man was found dead on the side of the road by emergency personnel working in the area of 109 Street and 104 Avenue. He said the man was ejected from the vehicle as it was travelling at a high speed while turning a corner. Vanderland added he did not know how the man was ejected.

The SUV continued to the hospital where the injured female is currently being treated for nonlife threatening injuries, Vanderland said.

A third victim was also shot at the location and Vanderland said the man made his own way to the hospital where he was treated for non-life threatening injuries.

Homicide detectives are investigating and an autopsy is scheduled for Tuesday morning when more information on the exact cause of death is expected to be made available.

The ages of the three people involved are not known at this time.

If confirmed, this will be the city’s 28th homicide of 2017, two of which Edmonton police are not counting because one involved an officer fatally shooting a suspect, and the other is a fatal hit and run.
