Roads to be closed Friday, Saturday to make way for triathlon series

As world-class athletes race through the city’s streets Friday and Saturday as part of the Internatio­nal Triathlon Union (ITU) World Triathlon Series, commuters should be prepared for road closures.

Roads will be closed southwest of downtown and around the University of Alberta, the City of Edmonton said in a news release.

The following roads will be closed Friday, July 28, from 2:30 p.m. to 8 p.m.:

Emily Murphy Park Road and ■

Mayfair overpass, from Saskatchew­an Drive to William Hawrelak Park

Saskatchew­an Drive from 110 ■

Street to 116 Street

111 Street from 90 Avenue to ■

Saskatchew­an Drive

90 Avenue from 110 Street and ■

111 Street

These roads will be closed Saturday, July 29, from 5 a.m. to noon:

Groat Road from 87 Avenue to ■

107 Avenue

Emily Murphy Park Road ■ between Saskatchew­an Drive and William Hawrelak Park

Saskatchew­an Drive from 87 ■

Avenue to 116 Street

116 Street between Edinboro ■

Road and Saskatchew­an Drive

These roads will be closed from noon to 4:30 p.m., Saturday, July 29:

Emily Murphy Park Road ■ between Saskatchew­an Drive and William Hawrelak Park

116 Street from Edinboro Road ■ to Saskatchew­an Drive

118 Street from Edinboro Road ■ to Saskatchew­an Drive

Edinboro Road from 116 Street ■ to 118 Street

Hawrelak Park will be closed to vehicles between 4 p.m. Thursday until the end of the day Saturday.

Emily Murphy Park, including the boat launch, will have limited access on Friday between 2 p.m. and 8 p.m. and Saturday from 5 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.

Government House Park will either be closed or have limited access to traffic on Saturday between 6 a.m. and noon.

Golfers heading for the Victoria Park Golf Course on Saturday are advised that River Valley Road will only be accessible from the east side off 105 Street or from the west side off Victoria Park Road.

Those looking to catch swimmers, cyclists and runners in action may use the free Edmonton Transit Service shuttle to and from Hawrelak Park. Buses will depart Friday from the U of A Windsor Car Park (9217 116 St.) every 10 minutes starting at noon to Hawrelak Park. Pickup and drop off will be on the south side of 87 Avenue west of 116 Street at bus stop #2666. The last departure from Hawrelak Park will be at 9 p.m.

Shuttle service from the Windsor Car Park to Hawrelak Park and back will continue Saturday between 5 a.m. and 5:30 p.m. with courtesy stops on 87 Avenue west of 116 Street. Pickup at the courtesy stop will be on the north side of 87 Avenue at bus stop #2851 with drop off on the south side of 87 Avenue at bus stop #2666.

Spectators can park in the Windsor, Stadium and Education car parks. Those who park in Windsor Car Park can get a discounted daily rate of $5.50 by using promotion code 93730 when prompted for a coupon code while paying for parking using one of the machines.

Regular riders on bus routes 128 and 130 should anticipate detours Friday and Saturday.
