Prospects will play a Game 5 in Speedy Creek

-

The Edmonton Prospects pride themselves on their stellar defence, but it let them down in Game 4 against the Swift Current 57s.

With a chance to win their first Western Major Baseball League championship in franchise history, the Prospects committed four errors, and it cost them dearly as Swift Current came from behind to post a 6-4 victory Wednesday night in front of 3,226 fans at ReMax Field.

The best-of-five series is now tied 2-2 with Game 5 at 7:05 p.m. Thursday in Swift Current.

“We made some bad throws and it cost us at least two or three runs,” Prospects head coach Ray Brown said.

“We’re human. Those things are going to happen, but it’s just disappointing all those mistakes happened today in the biggest game of the year.”

Bobby St. Pierre was giving the Prospects all kinds of trouble through the first five innings. He only gave up two hits through the first five innings before he ran into trouble in the sixth.

The Prospects looked nervous early on as starting pitcher Zaine Foth-Thomas’s throwing error on a pickoff play led to the 57s taking a 1-0 lead.

Foth-Thomas settled down the rest of the way and pitched five solid innings, giving up three runs on seven hits and struck out five.

Edmonton tied it up at 1-1 in the third inning after a Dean Olson grounder scored Anthony Cusati.

The 57s regained the lead in the sixth after an RBI double by shortstop Brett Esau and a perfect bunt by catcher John Baiada. Both runs were scored after two errors from the Prospects.

“We have the best defence in the league, and even the best defence makes some errors,” Prospects left-fielder Derek Shedden said.

“It’s annoying. We really wanted to win the championship at home, but we’re not out of this fight.”

Veteran Scott Gillespie will start for the Prospects in Game 5.
