MY LOVE LIES FROZEN IN THE ICE

- Justin Bell

★ ★★★★ out of 5

Stage 3, Walterdale Theatre

“The last thing that freezes is the heart.”

It’s a somewhat terrifying line from the beginning of a show about Arctic explorers, making you wonder if it’s foreshadowing or just a creepy line describing exploration of the Far North.

Three explorers prepare for the adventure of a lifetime, packing up their balloon to travel to the farthest reaches of the world: the North Pole. Solomon, his sister Matilda and her husband Nils are ready to throw themselves into the unknown in search of . . . well, just in search of new adventures.

This is 1897 after all, more than 10 years before people actually made it to the geographic North Pole. Now, these three friends finally cracked the formula for their hydrogen balloon and can make the journey.

Dead Rabbit Theatre has done an amazing job with this partdrama, part-comedy, part-musical. This London-based theatre crew has pulled off the Fringe double whammy, at turns both hilarious and heartwarming.

They have also done an amazing job with the set design. It’s 25 C outside, but the atmosphere inside the Walterdale is downright frigid. Using a simple nylon parachute and some ladders, they have built an incredible setting for their amazing journey.

My Love Lies Frozen in the Ice is what makes the Fringe a magical, special place. It’s definitely a must see at this year’s festival.
