TIMELINE OF SATURDAY’S ATTACKS

-

8:15 p.m.

A man driving a white Chevrolet Malibu crashed through a traffic barricade at 107A Avenue and 92 Street, striking Const. Mike Chernyk. After the Malibu collided with a parked police car, the driver got out of the vehicle and began attacking the officer with a knife. The suspect ran off down 92 Street. Chernyk radioed for help.

Police then broadcast information about the vehicle’s registered owner to all patrol officers across Edmonton.

An ambulance took Chernyk to hospital.

Police established checkstops around the stadium and a manhunt began.

11:30 p.m.

A large U-Haul truck pulled up to a police checkstop on Wayne Gretzky Drive near 112 Avenue, where two officers were working. When one officer checked the driver’s licence, he recognized the name as similar to the name in the broadcast. The officer returned to his car to call for backup. As he did, the U-Haul truck fled.

A senior supervisor decided officers should follow the fleeing truck.

11:40 p.m.

At least four police vehicles pursued the truck, which proceeded to Jasper Avenue, striking at least four pedestrians between 107 Street and 109 Street on Jasper Avenue.

Just before midnight

Witnesses near the Matrix Hotel at 100 Avenue and 106 Street heard loud bangs and saw a U-Haul truck tipped on its side with a hole in the windshield.

Police vehicles used a “deliberate, tactical manoeuvre” to stop the truck, which caused it to roll. Police broke the windshield, used a noisy stun grenade to distract the suspect, and tried to remove him from the truck. When he resisted, they used a Taser to disable him.

He was arrested, seen by a doctor, and taken for questioning.
