A bizarre crash in Nisku that ended Monday morning with five naked people in police custody began with a kidnapping, RCMP said.

A man, a woman and a six-weekold child were kidnapped by an unknown number of assailants at a Leduc County home at 9:30 a.m. Monday, police said Tuesday in a news release. The man, whose age was not given, was forced into a vehicle’s trunk.

The kidnapping victims were targeted and “all parties” knew each other, police said.

While the car was in motion, the man escaped. A short time later, the woman and baby managed to get out of the vehicle. None of the three were injured.

“A passerby offered assistance and secured all three in his truck,” the release said.

“The suspect vehicle rammed the rear of the truck and ended up in the ditch.”

RCMP arrested five people after the collision, which happened just 17 minutes after the kidnapping.

On Monday, RCMP said the five who were arrested were naked, but have not explained why. Police believed drugs and alcohol may have been factors in the incident.

RCMP Cpl. Laurel Scott reiterated Tuesday that the alleged kidnappers were the ones who were naked — not the three people who were kidnapped.

She did not know whether they were naked at the time of the kidnapping, or whether they removed their clothes after.

According to Environment Canada, the temperature Monday morning at nearby Edmonton International Airport was -12 C with a wind chill of -18.

Three adults remained in police custody Tuesday. Two youths were released without charges.

Charges were pending against the adults for kidnapping and resisting arrest, police said.
